================================================================== This is file 'CO2FUNG HELP' which documents the input files used in simulations of atmospheric CO2 using the GISS 3-D global tracer transport model. ================================================================== File File Resolution Name Type LatxLon (deg) ------ ------ ------- CO2FOS MRL 1x1 Release from fossil fuel burning CO2DEF HOU 1x1 Release from land use modification CO2OCN TAK 4X5 Exchanges with the oceans CO2VEG JAN 4X5 Monthly exchanges with vegetation and soils CO2VEG FEB 4X5 CO2VEG MAR 4X5 CO2VEG APR 4X5 CO2VEG MAY 4X5 CO2VEG JUN 4X5 CO2VEG JUL 4X5 CO2VEG AUG 4X5 CO2VEG SEP 4X5 CO2VEG OCT 4X5 CO2VEG NOV 4X5 CO2VEG DEC 4X5 DESCRIPTION CO2FOS MRL The pattern of CO2 release from fossil fuel burning. Marland's data are reported by country. Here we distributed 1987 data for each country according to the population density in each 1 deg x 1 deg cell for that country. The resolution is 1 deg x 1 deg, that of the population data base. The unit of the array is kg C/m2/y. No seasonal variations. The numbers in the array have been multiplied by 1.E6. Global source strength = 5.3 x 10**12 kg/y CO2DEF HOU The pattern of CO2 release from land use modification. Houghton et al (1987)'s data for each country were, in most cases, uniformly distributed among the area of the country. The resolution is 1 deg x 1 deg, that of the country data base. The unit of the array is kg C/m2/y. No seasonal variations. The numbers in the array have been multiplied by 1.E8 Global source strength = 0.3 x 10**12 kg/y. CO2OCN TAK The pattern of CO2 exchange with the ocean. The resolution is 4 deg x 5 deg. This is the delpCO2 pattern reported as Figure 1 in Broecker et al. (1986) multiplied by gas exhange rates based on 14C. The pattern was used in curve (d) in Figure 1 of Tans et al. (1990). More recent data have not been released by Takahashi. The unit of the array is kg C/m2/y. No seasonal variations. The numbers in the array have been multiplied by 1.E7. Global source strength = - 2.6 x 10**12 kg C/y. CO2VEG JAN; CO2VEG FEB; ...... CO2VEG DEC The pattern of monthly CO2 exchange with natural ecosystems. These are the arrays used in Fung et al. (1987) and have resolution of 4 deg lat x 5 deg long. The unit of the array is kg C/m2/s. One array per month. The numbers in the array have been multiplied by 1.E13. The global annual source should add up approximately to zero (given vagaries of number of days per month and ways to interpolate between months). REFERENCE: ========= Broecker, W.S. et al.
