(1992). (b) Smoothing-spline values were calculated by fitting a spline curve with a period of 50% attenuation of 50 years. These parameters were chosen to generate a spline curve that dampens variations in the data with periods less than about twice the air-age resolution (80% distribution width) of 14 years.
