This directory contains daily record maximum and minimum temperature data from
424 U.S. Historical Climatology Network stations meeting stringent data completeness
requirements. These 424 stations represent the 2nd phase of defining a subset of the
1218-station U.S. Historical Climatological Network that enables robust assessment
of trends in record-setting daily Tmax and Tmin temperatures since 1911 (i.e., a
century-scale period of record). Many USHCN stations do not allow for such an
assessment due to significant amounts of missing data early in their periods of
record. This 424-station subset includes the initial
200-station subset (http://cdiac.ornl.gov/ftp/us_recordtemps/sta200/)
that was identified using especially stringent missing data
requirements (see /http://cdiac.ornl.gov/climate/temp/us_recordtemps/dayrec.html).
The additional 224 stations have slightly less stringent missing data
requirements, but the average percentage of missing data across all 424 stations
is still just 2.4%. Again, see the "dayrec.html" link above for further details on
missing data requirements and the rational behind them.

A graphical user interface for exploring these station data may be found at:
http://cdiac.ornl.gov/climate/temp/us_recordtemps/ui.html

The subdirectories contained in this directory are as follows:

/htxctxwtnctn contains individual station files for hot/cool Tmax records and
warm/cold Tmin records, giving the record value for the day of year
and the year(s) in which the record was set. There is also a 'ALL424sta' file
for each temperature record type that is a concatenation of all the station files,
sorted by station number.

/htxctx contains files for hot/cool Tmax records, where each line in a file gives the hot Tmax
and cool Tmax record value for each day of the year, along with the year the record was set or tied.
There is also a 'ALL424sta' file that is a concatenation of all the station files,
sorted by station number.

/wtnctn contains files for warm/cold Tmin records, where each line in a file gives the warm Tmin
and cold Tmin record value for each day of the year, along with the year the record was set or tied.
There is also a 'ALL424sta' file that is a concatenation of all the station files,
sorted by station number.

/tmax_serial and /tmin_serial contain individual Tmax/Tmin station files, each sorted
from Jan. 1, 1911 through Dec. 31, 2010, with Tmax and Tmin for all days
(not just record-setting values). There is also a 'ALL424sta' file that is a
concatenation of all the station files, sorted by station number.

/tmax_by_doy and /tmin_by_doy contain individual Tmax/Tmin station files, each sorted
by day of year, (i.e., all day 1's, all day 2's, etc.) over 1911-2010, with
Tmax and Tmin for all days (not just record-setting values). Data for each day
of the year is sorted from high to low for Tmax, and from low to high for Tmin.
There is also a 'ALL424sta' file that is a concatenation of all the station files,
sorted by station number.

Also, an inventory file containing metadata for the 424 stations is available in this
directory (invent_424.txt). A description of the inventory file's contents may be found
on the USHCN website at http://cdiac.ornl.gov/epubs/ndp/ushcn/daily_doc.html#stations
