The sampling site at Syowa is operated in cooperation with the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition and the National Institute for Polar Research. The first NOAA/CMDL flask air samples from Syowa were collected in 1986. The annual atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio at Syowa rose from 349.3 parts per million (ppm) in 1988 to 354.2 ppm in 1992, or 1.23 ppm per year.
Atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios at this Antarctic site show a seasonal pattern: the annual drawdown typically occurs in January-April, and the annual buildup occurs in September-December. As in the CO2 records from other Antarctic sites, the seasonal amplitude is quite small, no more than a few parts per million.
